IndustrialRevolution.ai Notes on the fourth engine

The engine
changed. Again. IndustrialRevolution.ai

Every industrial revolution starts the same way. A new source of work arrives, and everything built around the old one — the factories, the jobs, the capital, the maps — has to be built again. Steam. Electricity. Silicon. Now: machines that decide.

§ 01

The sequence

Four times, the definition of work has moved.

Each shift took a task that only humans could do, made it purchasable by the unit, and left the surrounding world obsolete faster than it could be rewritten.

Steam

Force stopped being something a body produced. Output decoupled from muscle, and the mill moved to wherever the coal was.

Electricity & the line

Work was cut into steps, timed, and repeated. Scale became an engineering problem, and skill migrated from the worker into the process.

Computing & the network

Work turned into information, and information began moving at effectively zero cost. Coordination got cheap; everything downstream of it changed.

Machine cognition

Judgment becomes a unit you can buy. Not the lifting, not the routing — the deciding. That is the part every previous revolution left alone.

Why this one isn't a rerun

The pattern rhymes. The mechanism doesn't.

A —— The engine

It has an opinion.

Steam multiplied force. Electricity multiplied throughput. Software multiplied reach. This engine multiplies judgment — it produces a choice, not a motion, which means it enters the parts of a business no machine has ever been let into.

B —— The factory

The mill is a substation.

The new plant is measured in megawatts, sited next to generation, and constrained by interconnection queues and transformers. Industrial-era physics is the binding constraint on a software-era product.

C —— The clock

Adoption outran the buildout.

Steam took eighty years to reshape a continent. A model reaches one this afternoon. Demand now arrives faster than power, silicon, transmission, or institutions can answer — and that gap is where the next decade actually happens.

§ 03

What gets rebuilt

Revolutions are infrastructure problems wearing a technology costume.

Power
Load growth returns after two flat decades. Siting, generation, and the grid become strategy rather than utility overhead.
Labor
The question stops being which jobs vanish and becomes which decisions a person still signs their name to.
Capital
Software's asset-light era ends. Compute is a depreciating industrial asset with a delivery schedule and a power bill.
Trust
When output is cheap and fluent, provenance and verification become the scarce goods.

The point

Every revolution is obvious afterward.
